Two Podcasts for this Throwback Thursday

Posted in movies, nostalgia, pop culture with tags , , on June 11, 2015 by Paxton

Well, it’s Throwback Thursday, time to gaze back into the ether and enjoy some nostalgic reminisces about times past. I have two podcasts that are just perfect for this lazy, nostalgic day.

First up, the Cult Film Club Podcast takes a look at a movie called Ping Pong Summer.

Ping Pong Summer

While this movie was made just last year, it takes place in the summer of 1985 and is very much informed by those lazy 80s summers. It stars Lea Thompson, John Hannah, Susan Sarandon, a vintage arcade center called the Fun Hub and lots of ping pong.  It’s one I think you should definitely check out.

Also dropping today, a Nerd Lunch Extra Helping all about the 1990 anime-inspired sequel to 1983’s Masters of the Universe Filmation cartoon, The New Adventures of He-Man.

newHe-Man

It features He-Man getting sucked into the distant future of Eternia and battling against…well, Skeletor. Again. Yeah, check it out, it’s sort of a fascinating subject.  We talk about the cartoon, the characters, who’s returning, who’s absent.  We even delve into the toys.  Lots of fun discussion.

Posted in Billy the Kid, Genres, movies, podcast, pop culture, Western with tags , , , , , on December 16, 2014 by Paxton

Cult Film Club

This month Cult Film Club does our very first double feature episode!  In this double feature we are discussing BOTH Young Guns movies!

And the discussion went on so long we had to split it into two episodes. So, Episode 22a of the Cult Film Club podcast focuses on the first Young Guns movie. We talk about our history with the movie, our favorite scenes, the voluminous cast and the lack of movie score.

Then, Episode 22b is all about the sequel, Young Guns II.  We discuss our history with that movie, our favorite scenes, the voluminous cast and cameos, the awesome Silvestri score as well as a little bit of Billy the Kid’s history.

It’s a super fun discussion and we hope you have as much fun listening to it as we did recording it.  And if you did enjoy our Young Guns double feature go check out Shawn and my list of our ten favorite movie gunfighters.

Cult Film Club Episode 15: The Shadow (1994)

Cult Film Club

This month’s movie is what the Cult Film Club was founded on. When I was first talking with Shawn and Jaime about doing the podcast, this movie was first and foremost in my mind. I knew that eventually, we would get to talk about this movie.  And that movie is Russell Mulcahy’s The Shadow starring Alec Baldwin, John Lone, Penelope Ann Miller, Tim Curry and Ian McKellan.

The Shadow

The three of us dive into our first experiences with the movie (2 of the 3 of us saw it in the theater), we talk about our relationship to the movie and what we now think of it as time has passed.  Lots of talk about the origins of the movie, the Shadow character as well as some talk of the movie toys.

Cult Film Club Episode 14: The Last Dragon (1985)

Cult Film Club

Welcome to another exciting episode of the Cult Film Club.  This week, Shawn, Jaime and I are discussing the 80s martial arts/musical classic, Berry Gordy’s The Last Dragon.

Last Dragon

We go over the story and the awesome characters. We discuss all the things we love about the movie. We talk about Sho-Nuff and Eddie Arcadian. We talk about Bruce Leroy and special guest cameos by William H Macy and Chaz Palminteri.  We spend an hour essentially having nerd orgasms all over this movie.  Join us, won’t you?

When you’ve finished listening to the episode, check out 30 Things We Love About The Last Dragon.

Lots of Podcast goodness for you to consume

Several episodes of my podcasts have been posted lately.

Teen Wolf Bites

Episode 125 of the Nerd Lunch Podcast was posted last week to much acclaim. It features the final week in our Atomic Weeks celebration in which we are celebrating the Atomic Geeks’ 250th episode by having each member of the show as guests.  This final week has Digio as our guest and we are talking about breakfast cereals. We talk about our favorite cereals, mascots and commercials. We even take a moment to create our own cereal based on a pop culture property. It’s a fun episode, check it out on iTunes, Stitcher or listen to it online here.

Cult Film Club vs Nerd Lunch

This week, episode 126 features a crossover between Cult Film Club and the Nerd Lunch Podcast.  You may remember that all of us met up in Atlanta last month.  While we spent our time eating and drinking our way through the city, we did actually sit down and record a podcast.  And it has now gone live.  It’s our annual Summer Preview episode where we all talk about movies that we are excited to see in the coming months.  It’s a lot of fun.  Check it out on iTunes, Stitcher or listen to it online here.

Harold Ramis

And, in a bit of synergy, Shawn, Jaime and I have finally started recording Season 2 of the Cult Film Club podcast. The first episode is up in which we pay tribute to the great Harold Ramis by looking at three of his most famous and cult-y flicks; Stripes, Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day.  So click the RIP image above and listen to the awesome Episode 13 of The Cult Film Club Podcast.

Oh yes, and this is my 800th post on the Cavalcade.  You’re welcome, Internet.
