Let’s take a look at another vintage Fangoria issue, this time featuring Leatherface. Here is the cover for Fangoria #57 from 1986.

Fangoria #57

The cover story promotes the impending release of Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2.

It’s one of those “set visit” articles Fangoria did so well.  It talks to Tobe Hooper and the cast and gives a good preview of what’s in store for the movie.  It also talks to the makeup effects guys to give you an idea of what they were doing for the sequel.

This issue also featured a nice article with cool, color pics about Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives.

This was also a nice “set visit” article featuring a preview of what’s to come for what would be the sixth installment of the Friday series.

AWESOME-tober-fest 2012: Fangoria magazines featuring Freddy Krueger

AWESOME-tober-fest 2012

I did this last week for Jason Voorhees, so I’m going to do it again with Freddy. I reached back into my stash of vintage Fangoria magazines and pulled out a few that had covers and articles about A Nightmare on Elm Street or Freddy Krueger.

The first issue I found was Fangoria #62 from 1987. It has a cover story on A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and the reunion of Nancy and Freddy.  It was probably published a few months after the release of the movie.

This issue also featured the Friday the 13th Part 6 article about the gory scenes cut out of that film that I featured last week.

Here’s the cover article about Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3.

Fangoria 62 Nightmare 3 2 Fangoria 62 Nightmare 3 3

Fangoria 62 Nightmare 3 4 Fangoria 62 Nightmare 3 5

It’s an okay, mostly fluff article about what the new movie is supposed to be about. There are a lot of good photos, though, as Fangoria was always really good about including those in their main articles.  No really good inside info, though.

AWESOME-tober-fest 2012: Fangoria magazines featuring Jason Voorhees

I was a big fan of Fangoria in the mid-to-late 80s. I still have most of my issues I bought back in the day.  So I went into the archives here at the Cavalcade HDQ and found issues of Fangoria that featured the movie maniacs I’m talking about this month.  I was able to find issues featuring all of them.  So, today, I’m looking at Fangoria #68 from 1987.  It featured a cover story about Jason Voorhees.

This is also the issue which featured the movie maniac beach party comic strip I posted on Day 1 of AWESOME-tober-fest.

The Jason cover story is an investigative interview with the actors who portrayed Jason in the first six installments of the Friday the 13th franchise.  It’s called The Six Faces of Jason and features some cool behind the scenes pics of the making of the franchise up to that point.

Here are the first 4 pages of the article.  You can click these images to see them BIGGER on Flickr.

Six Faces of Jason 3 Six Faces of Jason 4

Unfortunately, this is a two part article so they only cover the first three movies in this issue.  I assume Parts 4-6 are covered in the next issue, which I don’t have.

The actors interviewed in this particular issue are:
1. Ari Lehman who played the child Jason in the original Friday the 13th.
2. Warrington Gillette who played the unmasked Jason at the end of Part 2.  However, this article doesn’t mention that Steve Daskewisz played “bag head” Jason throughout the rest of the movie.
3. Richard Brooker who played the first Jason to get the hockey mask in Part III.

Presumably, in the second part of this article in the next issue, they would interview:
4. Ted White who played Jason in The Final Chapter.
5. Tom Morga who played Jason in a hallucination in Part 5.
6. CJ Graham who played Jason in Jason Lives.

The most famous Jason, Kane Hodder, wasn’t a part of this article because he didn’t play Jason until 1988’s Part VII: The New Blood.  The article is an interesting look back at the previous movies and gives small insight into actor experiences and casting.  One piece of trivia I learned from this article was that only one of these six men were offered the chance to play Jason a second time.  And he refused.   The article in this issue didn’t mention who specifically, so I have to assume it’s one of the last three guys.

And we are off. Today is day one of AWESOME-tober-fest! Each week of this month will belong to a different movie maniac. This first week my focus will be Norman Bates. Next week will be Jason Vorhees followed by Freddy Krueger, Leatherface and finally Michael Myers.  There may be some mix-and-match in these upcoming weeks, but the majority of each week will feature one of the maniacs.  So, let’s begin this week, with a mix-and-match.

Here is an awesome full page comic strip starring all of the movie maniacs.  It comes from Fangoria magazine #68, 1987.  Click the image to see it BIGGER on Flickr.

I also found a print from Deviant Art showcasing a party at the Bates Motel also featuring all of our movie maniacs.  It’s called Bates Motel Psycho Party and was done by frankenstylin.
