This is it, Nerd Lunch’s final drilldown for the final film in the original Star Wars trilogy.

ROTJ

May and Kay return to discuss the 1983 conclusion to the original trilogy. We discuss our first viewing of the movie, some of our favorite parts, some of our least favorite parts and we delve a bit deeper into our heroes’ possible planning sessions for Han’s rescue at Jabba’s palace.  Lots of fun to be had here and we announce the continuation of these drilldowns into the prequel trilogy.

More Young Guns vintage trading cards!

Posted in 80s, Billy the Kid, books, movies, nostalgia, pop culture with tags , , , on July 8, 2015 by Paxton

A month or so ago Shawn Robare and I unveiled our custom set of vintage Young Guns trading cards. I showed you the even numbered cards in the set (Billy, Dick, Charlie, Tunstall, etc) and Shawn showed the odd numbered cards (Doc, Chavez, Dirty Steve, Murphy, etc). Also, if you guys were paying attention, we both revealed some variant/chase cards over on Cult Film Club which featured alternate image cards as well as custom book covers for the movie novelizations Shawn and I so wish existed.  Click the cover below to see these alternate card images plus see the other Young Guns novelization cover.

As such huge fans of the Young Guns movies, Shawn and I couldn’t leave well enough alone.  I mean, if we do an entire custom made vintage set of trading cards for the first Young Guns movie and then can’t do one for the sequel, then what are Shawn and I doing here?  Not our jobs, I’ll tell you that much.

So, we dug in and made a second set of cards for the sequel and now it’s time to see those cards.  Like last time, I’m going to show you half the set here.  If you want to complete the full set of Young Guns II cards, hop on over to Branded in the 80s and see Shawn reveal the second half of the set.

First off, lets check out the wax paper wrappers.  Here’s the main wrapper with Billy.

And as is sometimes done, we made a variant wax wrapper for the set featuring Pat.  Shawn even has a rare third wrapper variant over in his article featuring Arkansas Dave.  Check it out.

Now, let’s take a look at the odd numbered cards in this set. Like I said, jump on over to Branded in the 80s to see the even numbered cards in the set. You can click any of these images to see them BIGGER on Flickr.

Cavalcade Comics #9 – Uncle Sam The Ultimate Ninja vs Bionic Hitler

Cavalcade Comics

Issue #9 of the Cavalcade Comics’ Vintage Comic Throwdown is a very special 4th of July issue! This month we have a lot of characters featured in a very special memorial issue. But the main character we are focusing on is Uncle Sam: The Ultimate Ninja!

Cavalcade Comics 9

Trained in the dark arts of ninjitsu, Sam uses his deadly abilities to stop the forces of evil, namely Nazi Gorillas and Bionic Hitler. And he does it with a little help from Elvira! Tell me that’s not a special celebratory line up of awesome characters! You can’t, because it is.

I love how this came together.  I tried to pattern this cover after some Golden Age anthology titles which featured some main action or character on the right with secondary characters/villains in a sidebar on the left.

Uncle Sam Ultimate Ninja is actually based on the cover for Marvel’s Nth Man The Ultimate Ninja #2 from 1989.  I just had to mock up some striped pants, hat and chin beard.  Elvira is from Elvira’s House of Mystery #8 from 1986.

Nth Man #2 Elvira's HOM #8

The Nazi Gorillas were actually from DC’s Weird War Tales #89 (1980) and I cobbled together Bionic Hitler from a few different places all of which I can’t be bothered to remember right now.  But I love him so expect Bionic Hitler to return at some point.  And Uncle Sam.  And possibly even Elvira.

This weekend is 4th of July.  Hope everyone has a safe holiday.

Nerd Lunch Episode 184: Down the Rabbit Hole

Nerd Lunch Podcast

This week on the Nerd Lunch Podcast CT and I are joined by Timly Barger from timlybarger.com and Jeff Somogyi of sommerjam.com.

This week we are taking one of those trips through the Wikipedia rabbit hole.

Down the Rabbit Hole

You know those trips, you go out to Wikipedia to look up something and next thing you know, 20 minutes later, you’re 50 pages away from where you started.  So, we have two of us pick random topics and we see if we can somehow navigate our way from the 1991 movie Karate Cop all the way over to the 1981 Rush classic, Tom Sawyer.  We make several stops along the way.  Come join us on this Internet-y trip!

Two Podcasts for this Throwback Thursday

Posted in movies, nostalgia, pop culture with tags , , on June 11, 2015 by Paxton

Well, it’s Throwback Thursday, time to gaze back into the ether and enjoy some nostalgic reminisces about times past. I have two podcasts that are just perfect for this lazy, nostalgic day.

First up, the Cult Film Club Podcast takes a look at a movie called Ping Pong Summer.

Ping Pong Summer

While this movie was made just last year, it takes place in the summer of 1985 and is very much informed by those lazy 80s summers. It stars Lea Thompson, John Hannah, Susan Sarandon, a vintage arcade center called the Fun Hub and lots of ping pong.  It’s one I think you should definitely check out.

Download the latest episode of Cult Film Club from iTunes, Stitcher or listen to it online right here.

Also dropping today, a Nerd Lunch Extra Helping all about the 1990 anime-inspired sequel to 1983’s Masters of the Universe Filmation cartoon, The New Adventures of He-Man.

newHe-Man

It features He-Man getting sucked into the distant future of Eternia and battling against…well, Skeletor. Again. Yeah, check it out, it’s sort of a fascinating subject.  We talk about the cartoon, the characters, who’s returning, who’s absent.  We even delve into the toys.  Lots of fun discussion.
