The Best Movies I saw in 2015

Movie Board

Time to continue my year end round ups with my favorite movies list.  Today, I’m not only judging movies that I watched that opened last year, but ALL movies I watched for the first time in 2015.

I’ll start off with a list of my favorite movies that were released in 2015 and I’ll finish up with movies that were released in other years but I only saw for the first time last year.  I may even throw in some honorable mentions as I love to do.

So, without further ado, here are my favorite movies I saw in 2015.  In no particular order.

Kingsman: The Secret Service – Wow, what a great movie.  I love Colin Firth and Michael Caine.  I’m ambivalent about Sam Jackson because I’m somewhat tired of him being “Sam Jackson” in every movie.  But the concept of this movie intrigued me so I saw it and I love it.  Firth is amazing and Sam Jackson actually mixes it up a little and becomes a very interesting villain.  I really enjoyed this movie.

Mad Max: Fury Road – So, Nerd Lunch and Cult Film Club did our Mad Max drilldown last year.  I finally watched all the original Mel Gibson Mad Max movies for the first time for that podcast.  I enjoyed them more than I was expecting.  Then, I went to see this in the theater and it BLEW MY DAMN MIND HOW AWESOME A MOVIE COULD BE.  I’d be hard pressed to pick my favorite movie this year, but this would definitely be in the running.  Balls out action, insanely detailed characters and world building.  Just amazing.

The Hateful Eight – I like pretty much everything Quentin does. There are some lows for me, but it’s mostly up.  I loved Django Unchained and I was excited to see Quentin return to westerns for his next movie.  This is a much more mean spirited film than Django, but it’s every bit as good.  Sam Jackson, my boy Walton Goggins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bruce Dern.  All of them are awesome in this.  So, so good.  I want to see it again right now.

Creed (Blu-ray + DVD + UV) – I’m a fan of most of the Rocky movies.  My personal favorite is probably Rocky 3, but I generally like all of them.  So I was a little excited to see how this turned out and holy crap it’s f**king amazing.  This is a phenomenal movie.  It sort of blends the first movie with the third movie.  Michael B Jordan is awesome and Sly has never been better.  I was sobbing like a baby at the end.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Yep, here it is. In my favorites of the year. While not a perfect movie I really did enjoy it.  Yes, there are haters. And yes, I do have some story issues, but this felt like a Star Wars movie.  I was excited by the action.  I was laughing at the humor.  I actually liked the dialogue and the characters that said the dialogue.  So much fun and I can’t wait to take my 5 year old son to see this movie.

Now here’s an assortment of other movies I watched for the first time in 2015 that I feel at least deserve a mention. Some are new releases and some are older.

Jurassic World (2015) – I love Jurassic Park. LOVE it.  My abiding love for the first movie may have made me an easy mark for this third sequel because despite the large box office there’s a lot of mild dislike for this movie out there.  But I enjoyed it. Chris Pratt? Great.  Bryce Dallas Howard? Great.  Giant awesome dinosaurs? Great.  Cool little callbacks to the first movie? Great.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) – I’m a fan of this franchise. The fourth movie, Ghost Protocol, is probably my favorite, so I was pretty excited to see the gang return.  I was disappointed we didn’t get Paula Patton back as Jane Carter.  Not even a mention.  But despite that, the action is great and it was fun seeing Renner back and the debut of Alec Baldwin!  Such a fun, exciting movie.

Hotel Transylvania (2012) – While I don’t always love Sandler and his cohorts, I love the idea of using classic monsters in an animated movie. We watched this back in October with the kids and I’ve probably watched it like 20 times. Right now, this movie and the sequel, Hotel Transylvania 2, are my kids’ favorite movies. All they want to do is watch either these two movies or Phineas & Ferb on Netflix.  We had Hotel Transylvania 2 for 24 hours and we watched it 3 times.  Insane.  But I’m not complaining, especially about this movie.  It’s clever, funny and fun to watch.  I still enjoy it.

The Lego Movie (2014) – I watched this last year for the first time and loved it.  It’s so clever and funny and just a joy to watch.  I had watched it with my kids, and while they liked it (especially the ‘Everything is Awesome’ song), I think a lot of it went over their heads and they never really want to watch it again.  But I do.  I think it’s pretty great, even if the ending felt like it jumped the rails a bit.

  1. My turn!

Some of these we’ve already talked about and most of the rest are going to be high on my list, too.

Of the 2014 films, I *love* The Lego Movie and liked Hotel Transylvania quite a bit. HT is very funny and does a great job of creating a believable world that’s fun to spend time in. For all the Adam Sandlerness of it (his attempt to hide his voice behind a Bela Lugosi accent was distracting), it’s also a Genndy Tartakovsky film. You can see those aspects duking it out onscreen, but for me, Tartakovsky wins and I ultimately enjoyed the movie.

    • Genndy for the win, yes. Sandler was the only voice a little distracting but my son LOVES his Dracula. I can’t tell you how many “I NEVER SAID BLAH, BLAH, BLAH!” I get yelled at me around the house now. I loved everyone else like Buscemi as Wayne the wolf man, Andy Sandberg as Johnny and even Kevin James as Frank.

I’m a little sad Genndy is not returning for part 3.

  2. Great choices. If it hadn’t been for The Martian and Still Alice, I think Kingsman would have stole it for me. Loved that movie.
