9 Loves and Hates from the Sounds of the Season digital music channel (2011)
So, Steph and I listen to the Sounds of the Season digital music channel during the month of December. Actually, we start listening to it right after Thanksgiving. So, after over a month of listening to the channel, you hear certain songs over and over again that you hate. And there are some songs you start out hating that you wind up enjoying. If you read my article, Festival of the Tree, you’ll see not only the argument that Steph and I have every year about stringing the tree with lights, but that Feliz Navidad was my most hated song of the year because they played it until my ears bled.
So, listening to the digital music channel this year to decorate the house, here is a new batch of songs that I’ve grown to hate…and grown to love, but feel ashamed because I love them.
The Angel in the Christmas Play – I hate this song. Like literally HATE it. Most of the songs on the digital channel that are sung by kids, I hate. This is one of them. It’s supposed to be cute. But it’s not. It’s horrific.
Nuttin’ For Christmas – Another horrifically terrible song sung by a precocious scamp (who needs to be hit with a shovel). These are so awful I actually want to punch something when they come on. That’s how bad these songs are. They make me violent.
My Birthday Comes on Christmas – Head explodes into white hot rage.
Dominic the Donkey – Okay, this song is awful. I do hate it. However, I started singing it to PJ when it came on and we both started enjoying it. So I have a love/hate relationship with this song. I know it’s terrible, but it gets stuck in my head and I like it. And I hate myself for it. Yes, this song makes me ashamed of myself.
Must Be Santa This song is incredibly dorky, but it also has a fun sing-songy type chorus. You just feel like singing along. “…beard that’s white…”
Ho Ho Ho – This is by the new Chipmunks. Not the old cartoon ones, the ones from the newer much more awful movies. However, it’s actually a pretty good song. It’s a more modern style song but invokes the fun of their earlier stuff.
Buon Natale (Means a Merry Christmas to You) – By Nat King Cole. Sort of a sibling to Mele Kalikimaka by Bing Crosby. Nat King Cole’s voice is like buttah. Plus, this is just a good song.
Merry Christmas Baby – By The Boss. Now, I’m not a huge Boss fan. As a matter of fact, I hate his version of Santa Claus is Coming to Town with the fiery passion of 1000 suns probably because the seasonal channel plays it all the f**king time. But Merry Christmas Baby is less heard and I really like it.
Christmas in Hollis – By Run-DMC from the very first A Very Special Christmas album. It’s become a classic on its own and the channel used to play it, but I haven’t heard it this year. Which makes me sad.

Ahh, Christmas in Hollis always takes me back to that Christmas party at Nakatomi Plaza.

LOVE Christmas in Hollis.

Damnit Google Reader! Why did you take away my share button.
LOVE this post, Pax. I haven’t heard of most of these songs, but the great thing about Pandora (Indie Christmas if you’re curious) is I can give a thumbs down and the song goes away.
Though I do love Merry Christmas Baby by Bruce. Love it!
Christmas music I loathe? Neil Diamond. My mom LOVES him and it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. Aaron Neville also sucks.

Yeah, Neil Diamond is hit or miss for me, Trish. Like some, hate some.
The other thing the holiday channel keeps playing is the Glee Christmas album. Those songs sound like one of those generic CDs sung by some unnamed band. Boring.

I dont know if this is a christmas song, but “Red Shoes” has been played alot lately. If you haven’t heard it, its about a poor kid who wants to buy red shoes for his dying mother so she’ll look pretty when she meets Jesus. Quite possibly the most depressing, treacly awful piece of songmaking ever.
And Bruce’s “Santa Claus is coming to town” ignites in me a flame of hatred that dwarfs the sun.

Red Shoes sounds like that Dear Mr Jesus song. TERRIBLE.
