Cavalcade of Awesome

Okay, had an interesting week this week. Work and personal stuff kept me from typing a proper article. So, I have a potpourri of stuff to talk about today. The first is a cool email exercise that creates your own personal album cover, including band name and album title. It’s totally random and uses Wikipedia and Flickr to find the info.  It was first sent to me by my friend Steve and I’ve passed it along.  Here are the instructions:

1 – Go to Wikipedia. Hit “random”
or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first Wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 – Go to Quotations Page and select “random quotations”
or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last few words of the very last quote is the album title.

3 – Go to Flickr and click on “explore the last seven days”
or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4 – Mash it all together.

5 – Post it, with this text and TAG the friends you want to join in. (Or just the ones that you think might have the skills to know how to do this – that is why I tagged these people!)

So, without further ado, here is my album cover.  My band name is Run Like Hell and the album’s name is “Doing Something Interesting”.

I don’t have Adobe Photoshop on my computer at work so I couldn’t make it as purty as I would like.  Instead, I used Google Presentation to do the mash up. Presentation works just like Powerpoint and I think it turned out cool. Plus I love my band name.  It’s what I do 3 days a week.

What else is going on?  Hmmmm….

Oh yes, I see that an unrestored copy of Action Comics #1, the first appearance of Superman, was put up for auction today.

This comic is one of the most important issues in the history of comic books. Before this issue came out in 1938, comic books either reprinted old news strips or created funny stories based on old news strips. Superman’s debut would change all of that and pretty much invent the idea of a costumed super hero.

What’s so special about this particular copy, other than the fact that only about 100 copies of this issue even exist, is that it has not had any restoration work done to it since the owner bought it off the rack of a second hand shop in 1951 for thirty-five cents.  This thirty-five cent investment, originally borrowed from his dad, could net the owner close to half a million dollars.  Not bad for something he found forgotten in his mother’s basement.

Great job, isn’t it? Some of the figure were, in fact, customized. But it looks great!
