Gate River Run: My declaration of intent

Jacksonville’s biggest (read “Most Popular”) race is the Gate River Run (click image up top for more info). I”ve been lurking around the event since I started running several years ago. However, I’ve been too chicken to actually sign up and run it, preferring to only run 5K races.  Well, the wife got fed up with me saying that someday I would do it so she pretty much has forced me to do it under threat of spousal violence (ie kicking my ass).

Gate River Run starting line

So, I officially started training this past week and I turned in my entry form on Saturday.  And just to keep myself honest, I’m making a delcaration of intent to the 3 readers who randomly happen by my blog looking for info about the Hula Burger.  I’ll be running the Gate River Run 15K (9.3 miles) on March 14, 2009.  It’s possible I may (repeat MAY) try to parlay this into a half-marathon by the end of the year.  We’ll see.

Today is President’s Day.  My wife, as a first grade teacher, has today off so I decided to also take it off so we can spend it together.  Have a good day whether you have it off or not.  I’ll be back in a day or so with another article.

Freakin’ awesome, dude!! Pretty soon, full marathon city!

You are using the same motivation I used: I told so many people I was doing it that I would have looked like a complete tool if I hadn’t. And don’t sell yourself short: your blog is enjoyed by tens of people all over this great land of ours.

When we are down there next week, I’ll be able to give you all sorts of good advice, like whats the best way to get the toenails out of your shoe after they fall off and which bandaids are best for the bloody nipples that will result. Read some more star wars and glean some Jedi Mind techniques to take your attention from the pain in your feet, knees and hips! (I really could go on like this all day).

I am just kidding. You’ll love it. Plus, by my estimation, you’ll burn 1500 calories doing it, which means all the crab chips you can eat.

  3. Cool! Don’t forget to tell us how you did!

  4. Mike — Thanks for the great advice. I can’t wait to completely decimate my body with an intense physical and mental pain.

Tink — You can be sure that if I finish and a) I’m not in the hospital or b) I”m not dead, I’ll be sure to let everyone on Earth know that I ran a 15K. I’ll probably take out a billboard on I-295 here in Jax. This news will escape NO ONE. I assure you.

  5. Sorry for the off comment but I did not see your e-mail listed anyplace.
