I remember the whole new Coke. I know I gave it multiple tries and came to the conclusion that it tasted too much like Pepsi (IMHO). I never had an issue with the sweetness levels of any soda... Pepsi included. I just did not like the taste of Pepsi enough to buy it on any consistant basis. I became one of those people that would snatch up 6 packs or singles of the original whenever I was lucky enough to find them. But they eventually disappeared from all local stores shelves and, being a teenager, I didn't have the cash or the means to aquire them from overseas. So there I was with what I considered to be two types of Pepsi product made by different companies and nothing to drink.

I believe it was then that I became a Dr. Pepper drinker. It was my own little way of protesting. It did have the advantage of being available pretty much everywhere, regardless of whether the venue I chose served Pepsi or Coke. Admittedly at some point, some places replaced Dr. Pepper with Mr. Pibb because it was strickly a Coke product whereas Dr. Pepper has been an independent "gun for hire" so to speak. To this day, even though I am back to being a Coke Classic man at heart, if the venue serves Pepsi, I go for the Dr. Pepper every time.

Thanks. While I would be skeptical of a study Coke conducted at that time, all I have to go on is what I remember firsthand, and Coke and Pepsi both being from the Southeast complicates things.

Marketing studies that were done years later to determine what actually happened. Actually, I think Coke even did a marketing study right after it happened. I know I read it on a marketing site when doing this article. I'll see if I can find it again.

"Where the discourse began was in the Southeast, where Coke was originally formulated and sold back in the late 1800s. People were reacting to the fact that Coke was changed, not to the bad taste of New Coke. Most of the protestors didn’t even drink soda, much less Coke; they just didn’t like the idea of Coke changing something that apparently meant something to them."

What is this based on? We always had Coke in the house, but we briefly switched to Pepsi after buying our only bottle of New Coke.
